Getting Rowdy (Haiku, 8 parts)

A Collaborative Effort with Alex/asha

Alex/asha is 17. I am floored nearly every time I read her. I have to remind myself that I am still earthbound even when I feel as though I am being lifted up and out into space. Please, let that sit in your brain for a minute.

*Musical selection: Janelle Monae & Erykah Badu’s Q.U.E.E.N.*

you expect me to
conform — however, my rules
do not equal yours.

we fight the night out,
me with my hard head, you hurt
and tired of me.

yet, you still stay, why?
you are free to leave, please leave—
I ain’t keeping you.

why won’t you be fine
so I can go so dumbly
into the good — wait…

y’all know I’m meek-small
when alone; oh, I am NON-
SENSE when I’ve got my

own. And yet I sense
a sinkhole driving me up —
as I’m falling up

’cause I ain’t moving
back, to the Sanitary
CIRCUS whence I came.

to a mountain’s peak
I’d climb, believing your lies,
rowdy ’til I’m not.

Author’s Note: Over the next two months, I will be selecting some of Medium’s youngest and finest writers to collaborate with each week. They need to be heard. They support us. We must support them. Alex/asha was sixth, Kate Comstock, PLEASE GET READY!❤
