I taught all of my brothers how to swim, well except two of them. Wanna know how? By throwing them in the deep end one by one, at separate times and yelling from the side of the pool what to do. Smart? Heck, no. Mean? Very much so. Unbelievable? Not really. My brothers were rambunctious. They wanted to learn. They asked me how I’d teach them, so I showed them.
They’re fish. One even went on to lifeguard for 6 summers straight for one of the Junior High schools back home. Not the best way to teach an 8, 7, & 6-year-old how to swim, but, the job got done. And, I would not have let them drown. The moment I saw a slight struggle, I got in the water, but it never lasted long. They treaded water like pros.
To this day, they appreciate the experience, even though it was quite stupid. Your brother knew you did not intend to hurt him. He still knows that. He looks up to you because he knows you would do what you need to regarding his care. I think you’re on your way to letting this go a bit more.
This was one heck of a read, Patrick. Thank you for sharing.
